This plate is one of the traditional pieces handmade by Sezinando Fernandes Ramalho, one of the last 5 potters to use the ancestral technique of making black pottery in Bisalhães, a technique listed as an intangible World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The originality of this pottery lies in its colour, which can vary from charcoal black to dark grey depending on the pieces. This colouring is obtained during the firing process as the front of the kiln is filled with herbs and wet soil.
